common hospital acquired pneumonia
Staph aureus
Who usually presents with staph aureus infection?
Usually after having an influenza infection (so had influenza prior to pneumonia) or they may be an IV drug user
Staph aureus is also a common hospital acquired pneumonia
common community acquired pneumonia
Strep pneumonia
What organism is associated with red current jelly sputum?
Classic Klebsiella
Commonly associated with contaminated water and air conditioning systems
Legionella
Associated with alcoholics and aspiration pneumonia
Classic Klebsiella - another buzz word for this is red-current jelly sputum
commonly associated with people who have COPD
Haemophilus influenza
common in young adults, peaks every 4 years, may have dry cough and may have a rash called erythema and may have autoimmune haemolytic anaemia
Mycoplasma pneumoniae (atypical)
common in immunocompromised people and chronic pulmonary disease
Moraxella Catarrhalis
associated with people with HIV – immunosuppression/immunocompromised patients – may struggle to cough up sputum cause it’s so thick
Pneumocystis jirovecci pneumonia (fungi)
May present with hyponatremia (low sodium concentration in the blood), lymphopenia (reduced white blood cells) and dry cough
Legionella
common in patients with cystic fibrosis or bronchiectasis
Pseudomonas Aeruginosa
transferred from birds (e.g parrots), causes fever and dry cough
Chlamydia psittaci (atypical)
