Organisms And Their Environment Flashcards
What can external influences do to the organism communities?
Change them.
Living organisms form
Communities
How can we measure the distribution of organisms in an area?
Using a quadrat and transect lines.
What are organisms?
An individual made up of cells.
Define habitat
Where an organism lives.
Environmental factors that that effect organisms in the area.
Temperature.
Availability of nutrients and water.
Amount of light.
Oxygen and co2 in the air or water.
Why do organisms adapt?
To fit specific factors in their chosen environment.
What happens if the adaptations in an organism changes?
Some increase others decrease.
What is extinction?
When all members of one species are dead, therefore no longer produce fertile offspring of the same characteristics.
What happens in extreme cases of adaptation in which a species becomes extinct?
One species may thrive and take all the food, light etc and the other species will die off.
What is random sampling?
Using equipment such as a quadrat to estimate the distribution of organisms.
What is a transect?
The line, usually measured in metres, to measure the distance to place a quadrat in order to achieve valid data.
What is a quadrat?
The grid needed to measure the distribution of organisms.
