organisation topic 2 Flashcards
What are cells
They are the basic building blocks that make up all living organisms.
Large multicellular organisms
These are made up of organ systems.
Similar cells are organised into tissues
A tissue is a group of similar cells that work together to carry out a particular function. It can include more than one type of cell.
In mammals (like humans), examples of tissues include:
1) Muscular tissue, which moves contracts to move whatever it’s attached to.
2) Glandular tissue, which makes and secrets chemicals like enzymes and hormones.
3) Epithelial tissue, which covers some parts of the body, e.g. the inside of the gut.
What are tissues organised in?
Organs
What is an organ?
This is a group of different tissues that work together to perform a certain function.
What is an example of an organ?
The stomach.
What tissues are these organs made of?
Muscular tissue, Glandular tissue and Epithelial
What is the function of muscular tissue?
moves the stomach wall to churn up the food.
What is the function of Glandular tissue?
makes digestive juices to digest food.
what is the function of Epithelial tissue?
covers the outside and inside of the stomach.
