What is digestion ?
Break down of large insoluble food molecules into smaller, more soluble molecules that can be absorbed into bloodstream.
Name the 7 nutrients
proteins, carbohydrates, vitamins, fats, fibres, water and minerals.
What is peristalsis ?
the squeezing motion of the oesophagus to move food from the mouth to the stomach
What is egestion ?
The absorption of water
What does the pancreas do ?
Produces digestive enzymes which speed up digestion
What does the mouth do ?
The mouth is the entry point of food. Contains teeth to help break down food into smaller particles ( mechanical breakdown)
What does the salivary gland do ?
Releases enzymes as you chew to help the teeth break down the food.
What does the tongue do ?
Tongue is a muscle that helps to push food into your oesophagus
What is the oesophagus ?
Long tube where food travels from your mouth to your stomach
What does the stomach do ?
Churns up food
releases enzymes to chemically break down food
Stomach acid is present to kill any bacteria in food
What happens in the small intestine ?
Digested food is absorbed into the bloodstream
What happens in the large intestine ?
Absorption of water takes place
What does the rectum do ?
The muscles in the rectum help to pass faeces through the anus
What is the anus ?
Exit point for waste products from your body
Where are villi found ?
In the small intestine
