Organisation of The Nervous System Flashcards
1
Q
What is the Nervous System?
A
- A network of cells in the body
- Coordinates different organs and controls bodily functions
2
Q
What is the Central Nervous System (CNS)?
A
- Consists of the brain and spinal cord
- Brain- decision making centre
- Spinal Cord- passes signals between the brain and the rest of the body
3
Q
What is the Autonomic Nervous System (ANS)?
A
- Controls the things we do without having to think about it
- Sends signals to and from organs
- Blinking, breathing etc
4
Q
What is the Sympathetic Nervous System (SNS)?
A
- Activates fight or flight
- A process of adrenaline release
- Sweating, shaking, crying, increased BPM
5
Q
What is the Parasympathetic Nervous System (PNS)?
A
- Activates the rest and digest response
- Brings body back to normal state after an adrenaline release
6
Q
What happens if a part of your Nervous System is damaged?
A
- Different areas of damage can cause different symptoms
- Spinal cord damage- paralysis, slower reactions
- ANS damage- struggle doing automatic things
7
Q
What are the practical applications of the nervous system?
A
- Understanding of the system led to drug treatments
- Also led to better treatment options
8
Q
What is a consequence of this theory?
A
- The nervous system does not work on its own
- It works with other systems eg digestive
