Evolution Flashcards
1
Q
What is Evolution?
A
- How living things have changed overtime
- Usually in response to a change in the environment
2
Q
What is Natural Selection?
A
- Traits passed down through generations using genes
- Some traits increase survival rates
3
Q
What is the Environment of Evolutionary Adaption (EEA)?
A
- A species develops its most recent adaptions
- Increased rapid evolution- 10,000 years ago, from ape like beings on all fours to walking upright
4
Q
What is a genome lag?
A
- Changes happen fo our environment faster than our genes can keep up
5
Q
What are the sex differences in sexual selection?
A
- Females are choosier and are more invested
- Males are competing for mating rights
6
Q
What is Anisogamy?
A
- Women have 1 egg, once a month for 50 years, which means that the cost and worth of the egg is worth more than a mans sperm
- Men produce sperm everyday from the day they are born til the day they die. it costs low energy to produce and so it’s worrh is quite low
7
Q
What is the Fisherian Runaway Hypothesis?
A
- The balance between survival and reproduction
8
Q
What is a consequence of this theory?
A
- It has a gender bias
- Fight, flight, freeze does not explain a woman’s response to threat, only men’s. Women also have tend/ befriend aswell
- It’s also reductionist, suggests that human behaviour is a set of biologically driven impulses
