Organisation of nervous system Flashcards
Whats the central nervous system (cns)
is the division of the nervous system located within the skull and spine
whats the peripheral nervous system? (pns)
the division located outside the skull and spine
what two things is the pns made up of?
autonomic and somatic nervous systems
Whats the hindbrain? (Metencephalon)
the most posterior division of the brain
is composed largely of tracts carrying signals between the rest of the brain and the body
auditory & visual-motor functioning
What type of info involves the hindbrain and what functions is the info involved in?
Recticular info
Involved in functions such as Arousal Sleep Attention Movement maintenance of muscle tone various cardiac, circulatory, and respiratory reflexes
what does the Metencephalon differentiate into?
Pons and the Cerebellum
Whats Pons involved in?
connects the top of the brain to the cerebellum
Chemicals produced in the pons help maintain our sleep-wake cycle
whats the Cerebellum involved in?
Sensorimotor Control- controls movements & adapt to changing conditions
Cognition (e.g., decision making, language)
what two things is the forebrain composed of?
telencephalon and diencephalon
what parts are in the diencephalon+ their roles ?
Thalamus
gateway to consciousness
Hypothalamus
regulation of several motivated behaviors (e.g., eating, sleep, and sexual behavior)
what is the telencephalon’s roles?
largest division of the human brain
mediates the brain’s most complex functions
voluntary movement
interprets sensory input
mediates complex cognitive processes such as learning, speaking, and problem solving
whats in the telencephalon and its roles?
Limbic System
The limbic system is involved in the regulation of motivated behaviors
the circuit connecting the hypothalamus to the limbic lobe
the basis for emotional experiences
Basal Ganglia
the performance of voluntary motor responses and decision making (see Hikosaka et al., 2014)
nucleus accumbens
rewarding effects of addictive drugs and other reinforcers
what are the cells of the nervous system called and what do they do?
Billions of neurons underlie activity of the nervous system
Electrically excitable cells Process and transmit information around the nervous system
describe action potential and how information is processed in a single neuron?

whats synaptic transmission?
