Organisation of Nervous system Flashcards
Neurons
Functional unit of nervous system
Neurons: Cell body
Contains all the major cell organelles, generates genetic information and machinery for protein synthesis
Neurons: Dendrites
Receive input from other neurons and convey it to the cell body
Neurons: Axon
Sends info away from the cell body to other neurons or effectors
Neurons: Axon terminal
Essential for synaptic transmission to occur
Myelin sheath
Fatty covering around axons - considered ‘white matter’
Nodes of ranvier
Gaps between adjacent segments myelin, exposed to extracellular fluid
Glia cells
Produce myelin sheath
Support, nurture and protect nerve cells
Oligodendrocytes: produce myelin in the central nervous system
Schwann cells: produce myelin in the CNS
