What are the different kinds of politness?

A

Negative Poiteness:

  • Doesn’t want to intrude (I value your freedom)
  • Apologising before asking question
  • “Would you mind”

Positive Politeness:

  • Shows interst in other person (I like you)
  • Compliments
  • “how are you”

What are the 2 Speech Act Analysis?

A

Distributional Analysis

  • features that occur in coversation
  • E.g. oh, well, erm (hesitation marker)
  • These are discourse markes -> relate to previous part of conversation

Sequential analysis:

  • sequence of the differnt parts when we speak
  • E.g. greeting, doctor-patient interactions etc.

What are TRPs and TCUs?

A

Turn constructional units (TCU):

  • what we say

Transistion Relevance Places (TRP)

  • basically an oppurtunity for the other person to speak
  • After TCUs
  • Marked by snytax and intonational closure

Overlaps:

  • Speaker self selects TRPs, but speaker keeps tallking
  • Not Interuptions!
  • Supportive function

What are Adjacency Pairs?

A

First utterance requires a second utterance

  • question - answer, request - offer, greetings - greetings
  • some second pairs are more prefferred (invitation - acceptance)
  • occur close together, can have insertion inbetween
  • preferred immediatly, dispreferred often hesitation markers or pauses

What are the 4 different types of repairs?

A

Self-iniated and self-repaired:

  • Customer: Ehm, I would like to buy a ticket to the -, to Amsterdam, please?
  • Clerk: Do you want a single or a return?

Other iniated and self-repaired:

  • Alex: I don‘t to have dinner at that restaurant.
  • Sue: What?
  • Alex: I said I don‘t want to go to that restaurant.

Self-iniated and other-repaired

  • Alex: And here you have the- what‘s it called the
  • Sue: the carburetor?
  • Alex: Yes, the carburetor

Other iniated and other-repaired:

  • Alex: That lake over there is the largest of the country. Isn‘t it great?
  • Sue: It is, but it‘s not the largest of the country.
