Organisation + function of NS Flashcards
What are the organs of the NS?
- brain
- spinal cord
- peripheral nerves
- sense organs
What are the two divisions of the NS?
- CNS
- PNS
CNS: involve what + function?
brain + spinal cord
- receiving info from parts of body (sensory data)
- processing info
- send signals (motor commands)
PNS: involve what + function?
nerves + sense organs (eyes, ears, touch + pain receptors)
- connects NS with other systems
- delivers sensory info to CNS
- carry motor commands to peripheral tissues + effectors
What are the two divisions of the PNS?
- afferent division
Receptors: carry sensory signals to brain - efferent division
Effectors: carry motor signals from brain
What does the afferent division consist of?
3 types of sensory neurons:
- somatic (skin, muscles, joints)
- visceral (internal organs)
- special (special senses)
What does the efferent division consist of?
- somatic system (skeletal muscles)
- autonomic NS (smooth + cardiac muscles, glands)
What are the two cell types the neural tissue made up of?
- neurones
send & receive signals - neuroglia (glial cells)
support & protect neurons
What two matters is the neural tissue made up of?
- grey matter (processing info)
cell bodies, dendrites & unmyelinated neurones - white matter (transmits signals)
axons of myelinated neurones
