Organisation Flashcards
What are tissues?
Groups of similar cells that perform a specific function.
What is an organ system?
A group of organs working together to perform complex functions.
What is the function of the digestive system?
To break down food into smaller molecules that can be absorbed into the bloodstream.
What is the role of enzymes in the digestive system?
Enzymes speed up the chemical reactions involved in breaking down food molecules.
What is the function of amylase?
Amylase breaks down starch into sugars.
What is the role of the heart in the circulatory system?
The heart pumps blood throughout the body, delivering oxygen and nutrients to cells.
What is the function of red blood cells?
Red blood cells transport oxygen from the lungs to the rest of the body and return carbon dioxide to the lungs.
What is the role of platelets?
Platelets help in blood clotting to prevent excessive bleeding.
How do capillaries function in the circulatory system?
Capillaries allow the exchange of oxygen, nutrients, and waste products between blood and tissues.
What are the components of blood?
Blood consists of red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets, and plasma.
What is the function of the alveoli in the respiratory system?
Alveoli are the sites of gas exchange between the air and blood in the lungs.
How does the diaphragm aid in breathing?
The diaphragm contracts and flattens to increase the volume of the thoracic cavity, allowing air to be drawn into the lungs.
What is the role of bile in digestion?
Bile emulsifies fats, breaking them into smaller droplets to aid in their digestion.
What is peristalsis?
The wave-like contractions of muscles in the digestive tract that move food along.
What are villi, and what is their function?
Villi are small, finger-like projections in the small intestine that increase the surface area for absorption of nutrients.
What is the function of the liver?
The liver processes nutrients absorbed from the digestive tract, detoxifies chemicals, and produces bile.
What are antigens?
Antigens are foreign molecules that trigger an immune response.
How does the lymphatic system support the circulatory system?
The lymphatic system returns excess tissue fluid to the bloodstream and helps defend against infections.
What is homeostasis?
The regulation of internal conditions to maintain a stable internal environment.
What is the role of the kidneys in the excretory system?
The kidneys filter waste products from the blood and regulate water and electrolyte balance.
What is the purpose of the enzymes practical?
To investigate the effect of pH on the rate of reaction of the amylase enzyme.
