Organisation Flashcards
Organelle
A specialised unit within a cell which performs a specific function, e.g. nucleus
Cell
The basic building block of all living organisms
Tissue
A group of cells working together to perform a shared function, and often with similar structure
Organ
A group of different tissues that work together to perform a particular function
Organ System
A group of organisms that work together to perform a particular function
Organism
Multiple organ systems working together to form an organism
Catalyst
Any substance that speeds up the rate of a reaction without being changed or used up in the process
Enzymes
Proteins that function as biological catalysts
Epidermis Tissue
- Covers the whole plant
- Covered with a waxy cuticle
- Helps to reduce water loss by evaporation
Palisade Mesophyll
- Found under the epidermis tissue
- Has lots of chlorophyll
- Positioned at the top of the leaf for more light
Spongy Mesophyll Tissue
- Found under the palisade mesophyll
-Has lots of air spaces - Allows gases to diffuse in and out of cells
Xylem
- Found in the roots, stems and leaves
- Made of dead cells
- Strengthened with lignin
- Transports water and minerals through a transpiration stream
- One direction (roots to leaves)
Phloem
- Found in the roots stems and leaves
- Transport food
