Organic Synthesis Flashcards
Define reflux
Continous of condensation and evporation
What are the anti bumping granules for
To ensure boiling is smooth
What happens as the liquids are heated in reflux
The liquid with the lowest boiling point will begin to boil and evaporate
What happens when gas enters the condenser in reflux
The hot vapour rapidly cools and condenses. This liquid then falls back into the flask so all reactants and products are retained
Which liquid will boil first
The liquid with the lowest boiling point is the most volatile and will boil first
What happens when the gas enters the condenser in distill
Unlike reflux, when the vapour condenses it doesn’t fall back into the round bottom flask. It drops into a separate flask
What is the separated liquid called
The distillate
What are the preparations and purification of an organic liquid
- Use a separating funnel
- Drying with an anhydrous salt
- Redistillation
What is the separating funnel used for
Separates the organic layer and the water layer
Why might you need to distill your product again
Sometimes organic liquids will have similar boiling points
How do you convert a starting molecule into the target molecule
- Identify the functional groups in the starting and target molecules
- Identify the intermediate that links the starting and target molecules
- State the reagents and conditions for each step
