Organic reactions Flashcards
Combustion reaction formula?
CxHy (gas) + O2 (gas) -> CO2 (gas) + H2O (gas) [balanced]
Incomplete combustion reaction formula (limited O2 supply)
CxHy (gas) + O2 (gas) -> CO (gas) + H2O (gas) [balanced]
Do all organic moelcules undergo combustion reactions?
Yes
Define: substitution reactions
when an atom or group of atoms in one molecule are swapped with a hydrogen atom in another.
What hydrocarbons are involved in substitution reactions?
Alkanes
Define: addition reaction
the double bond is broken to form new single bonds.
What hydrocarbons undergo addition reactions?
ALkenes (and alkynes)
Define: condensation reactions
when a carboxylic acid is heated in an alcohol (or amine) react - creating a byproduct of water. There is a catalyst of sulfuric acid.
