organic pathways aos Flashcards
nmr define
relates to nuclear magnetic resonance, the spinning frequency of electrons and if its spin up or down
IR define
Infared radiation causes vibrations in the bonds of molecules whihc creates movement. these movements are then associated with wave numbers which are based on length and bonds
mass spec define
through mass spec, the molecule is fragmented into molecular ions which are charged. these fragments will go trhough a channel of magnetics and get bent and hit a detector. depending on the bend it will represent its mass to charge ratio and plot it on a graph
what is conc.h2so4 do
it acts as a reactant/ source pf h+ ions
IUPAC namign system
carboxylic acid
alcohol
amine
alkene,alykne,alkane
haloalkane
HPCL
seperate components
qualitative analysis:
Determine the components in a mixture
Pure compound should be run through HPLC
Sample is run through HPLC under same conditions
If the two chromatograms have peak at same Retention time → likely compound is in the sample
quantitative analysis:
Run a set of standard solutions under the same conditions and use peak area to produce a calibration curve
Sample run through same HPLC
Compare the peak area to the calibration curve to determine concentration
