like types of cells Flashcards
direct Contact for secondary/FUEL AND primary cells?
galvanic : two half equation occur seperately and not direct contact
fuels: half cells seprated in teh same vessel
hydrogen fuel cells
fuel is alway oxidised at the anonde and oxygen is reduced at the cathode
hydrogen fuel cell equations
oxidation: h2 –> 2h+ + 2e-
reduction: o2 +4 h+ + 4e- —> 2h2o
what does hgiha dn low temps mean for electrolytic cells
high temperature: increases the possibility and rate of the side reactions therefore reducing amount of reactants available for recharge
low temperatures: increases the possibility of crystallisation of reactants which prevents operation of cell
fuel cells
Electrode Properties:
Porous - allows reactants to diffuse through. Also provides a greater surface area for reactions to occur → increasing the power output
Inert - unreactive/does not participate in reaction
Catalyst - contains catalyst to speed up rate of reaction
Conductive - facilitates the flow of electrons through the electrode
-FUEL ALWAYS GETS OXISIDED
- much more efficient than combustion
