Organic Compounds - Homologous Series Flashcards
What is a general formula?
A formula that represents the composition of any member in a homologous series
Homologous Series
This is a series or family of organic compounds that have similar features and chemical properties due to them having the same functional group
What are the general characteristics of a homologous series?
- The same general formula
- Same functional group
- Similar chemical properties
- Gradation in their physical properties
- The difference in the molecular formula between one member and the next is CH2
What are the general formulas for alkanes and alkenes?
Alkanes: C n H2n+2
Alkenes: C n H2n
What is structural isomerism?
Structural isomerism is when compounds have the same molecular formula but a different arrangement of atoms.
Names and structures of the functional groups
Two types of isomers:
chain and position
In chain isomerism the structure of the carbon chain differs
In position isomerism, the position of the functional group differs
Chain isomerism (PIC)
Position Isomerism (PIC)
