Organic Compounds Flashcards
Why does benzene have a ring in the middle?
It represents the delocalised electrons
What are aliphatic compounds?
Organic compounds that don’t contain benzene rings
What is a functional group?
A specific group of atoms in a molecule that is responsible for the characteristic chemical reactions of that molecule
What are the prefixes for the haloalkanes?
-Chloro -Bromo -Iodo
What is the suffix for arenes?
-benzene (arenes are aromatic compounds)
What shape do single-bonded carbon atoms form? Bond angle?
They form a tetrahedron, bond angle is 109.5
What shape do double fonder carbon atoms form? Bond angle?
They form a trigonal planar shape, bond angle is 120degreee
What is an electrophile?
An ion or a molecule with a partial positive charge that will be attracted to a negatively charged region and react by accepting a lone pair of electrons to form a covalent bond
General formula for alcohols?
Cn H2n+1 OH
