Catalysts Flashcards
Steps of a reaction on a solid heterogeneous catalyst?
1) Adsorption (molecules attach to the surface of the catalyst)
2) Bonds break forming radicals, which then get together
3) Desorption (molecules detach from the surface)
When do you use cis/trans?
When the groups aren’t hydrogens
What do E/Z or cis/trans stand for?
Z or cis = same side
E or trans = opposite sides
Catalyst and conditions for ethene + hydrogen -> alkane?
150 degrees, nickel & high pressure
Or
25 degrees, platinum & room pressure
Which homogenous group turns bromine water colourless? And what product is formed?
Alkenes
Dibromoalkane
What is a heterogeneous catalyst?
A catalyst that is in a different physical state from the reactants
