Organic Compounds Flashcards
What is Carbon?
A Non-Metal
What is tretavalency?
4 valency electrons
Oxidation state of carbon
4,-4
Which element is the base of organic compounds?
Carbon
What is carbon concatenation?
Capability to form polymers like carbon.
What are organic compounds mainly made of?
CHONPS (Hydrocarbon backbone), Halogens.
Which bond have organic compounds?
Mainly covalent.
Are oc polar or non polar?
Non polar unless they have a very electronegative element.
Are oc soluble?
No unless they contain a polar group.
Are oc more dense than water?
Less dense than water.
What is oc’s boiling and melting points?
Low
Are ocs combustible?
They presence of oxygen.
How many electrons does carbon have s and in p?
2
SP3 Hybridization
S and P orbitals fuse together creating 4 hybrid orbitals.
Sp3 atomic form
Tetrahedral.
What is a sigma bond?
When two Sp3 orbitals bond.
Is a sigma bond the strongest?
Yes.
Which bonds does Sp3 have and creates?
Only single bonds. (4 Sigma)
Which angle between bonds does Sp3 hybridization have?
109.5°
SP2 Hybridization
S orbitals fuse with P orbitals creating three orbitals and leaving one P orbital alone :(((
Sp2 atomic form
Planar Triagonal.
Which type of bonds does Sp2 have and create?
Double bonds. (1 sigma, 1 pi)
Which angle does Sp2 have between bonds?
120°
What happens when two Sp2 bonds fuse together?
A sigma bond is created and the pure orbital will create a weaker bond called Pi. 2 Hybrid orbitals
