Organic Compound (chapter 3) Flashcards
What is Organic Compounds?
compounds that contain
carbon and make up living organisms
Why is carbon the backbone of life? [3]
-Carbon has 4 electrons in its outer shell.
-To satisfy the octet rule, it needs to share
4 other electrons.
-each carbon atom forms 4 bonds
3 types of Carbon Molecule
-straight chain
-ring
-branched chain
What is Macromolecule?
large chains of smaller molecules.
What is MONOMERS? [2]
-smaller subunits
-the base unit that repeats over and again.
What is POLYMERS?
-Organic macromolecules are made up of
repeating monomers
What is Condensation Reaction?
-the removal of water to connect monomers.
What is Hydrolysis Reaction?
-water breakdown to devide polymers
Four Basic Types of Organic Molecule /
Organic Compound?
-carbohydrate
-protein
-lipid
-nucleic acid
Characteristic of CARBOHYDRATE
-Carbohydrates are composed of C, H, and O.
Function of CARBOHYDRATE
- Main source and store of energy.
- Plants and some animals use it for
structural purposes.
3 classes of CARBOHYDRATE
1.Monosaccharides- single sugars
2.Disaccharides- double sugars
3.Polysaccharides- many sugars
State Physical and Chemical Characteristic of CARBOHYDRATE [4]
Physical Characteristic
1.Small
2.White
Chemistry Characteristic
1.Reducing Benedict test
2.Condensation reaction to form disaccharide or
polysaccharide
Examples of monosaccrharides? [3]
1.Glucose: plant
2.Galactose: milk
3.Fructose: fruits
Classification by the number of carbon
3C- triose
5C- pentose
6C- hexose
