Organic Chemistry Test Flashcards
Organic Chemistry:
The study of compounds that contain carbon.
Organic Compound:
A compound that contains carbon.
Hydrocarbon:
An organic compound that only contains carbon and hydrogens.
Alkanes:
A saturated hydrocarbon that contains only single bonds.
Alkenes:
An unsaturated hydrocarbon that contains double bonds.
Alkynes:
An unsaturated hydrocarbon that contains triple bonds.
Substituted Hydrocarbon:
A hydrocarbon that had at least one hydrogen atom that had been replaced by another element.
Nonmetal Replacement:
A substituted hydrocarbon that has at least one hydrogen replaced with another nonmetal atom.
Alcohol:
A substituted hydrocarbon where at least one hydrogen is replaced by a hydroxyl group. (Ends in Ol)
Organic Acid:
A substituted hydrocarbon that has hydrogen atoms replaced by a carboxyl group. (COOH)
Ester:
A substituted hydrocarbon that is created when an alcohol and an organic acid react, they leave water behind. (Esters give fruit and flows scent)
Isomer:
Two compounds that have the same chemical formula but different structural formula.
What makes an organic compound?
It contains carbon.
What makes carbon so versatile?
It has 4 valence electrons
Its is a non metal
Can bond covalently
What are the three main formations of carbon?
Straight, Branched and Rings (5c and 6c)
