Chemical Equation Test Flashcards
Define Chemical Change
A change that turns a substance into a new substance, bonds must break for this to occur
Define Physical Change
A change that changes the appearance of a substance but it is still the same substance.
Define Chemical Reaction
A chemical reaction is a chemical change occurs and a new substance is formed
How is a precipitate formed and what is it?
A precipitate is a solid that is formed when two liquids react
Define Endothermic Reaction
A reaction that needs a constant source of energy
Define Exothermic Reaction
Needs activation energy to get it going but then fuels itself
Define Activation Energy
The minimal amount of energy needed to begin a reaction
Define Concentration
How much of the reaction is in a specific volume
As concentration increases the reaction becomes longer, bigger and faster.
Define Catalyst and Inhibitor and give an example of each
Catalysts speed up reactions up by decreasing required activation energy. An example would be enzymes.
Inhibitors slow down or prevent reactions.
An example would be a food preservative.
Define Chemical Equation
An easy way to express a chemical reaction using formula.
Define Chemical Formula
A simplified way of describing what elements make up a substance.
Define a reactant
A substance that is being changed during a reaction
Products
The new substance that is created after a chemical reaction occurs
What is the law of conservation of matter?
Matter cannot created nor destroyed only changed.
What is an open system?
A system that allows particles to escape into the environment.
