Q

Word equation for combustion of ethene

A
  • place a lighted taper in a test tube of ethene to ignite the gas
  • add some limewater and shake gently
  • ethene burns with a luminous yellow flame
  • limewater turns from clear to milky proving there is carbon dioxide

Q

describe the method for the preparation of ethene

A
  • pour some ethanol into a boiling tube
  • use a glass rod to push glass wool into the boiling tube to soak up the ethanol
  • clamp the boiling tube on a retort stand horizontally and place some aluminium oxide half way along the boiling tube
  • set up the apperatus as showing and gentally heat the ethanol
  • must not directly heat the ethanol as it would pass too quickly over the aluminium oxide for it to be converted to ethene
  • as the ethanol turns into a vapour it passes over the aluminium oxide and get dehydrated to form ethene gas
  • collect test tubes of the gas over water. discord the first test tube as it contains air displaced from the apparatus
  • before turning off the Bunsen burner raise the delivery tube above the water to prevent suck back of water which would cause the boiling tube to crack

Q

What is 2 precaution of the preparation of ethene

A
  • do not heat the ethanol directly as it will pass to quickly over the aluminium oxide to be dehydrated to form then.
  • before turning off the Bunsen burner raise the delivery tube above the water to prevent the suck back of water which would cause the boiling tube to crack
