Organic Chemistry: Alkanes Flashcards
What is Organic Chemistry
carbon-containing compounds
What are Alkanes?
Saturated (single bond between carbon) carbons
What is the order of naming?
Meth= 1 Eth= 2 Prop=3 But=4 Pent=5 Hept=7 Oct=8 Non=9 Dec=10
How do you name an alkane
- Start with the longest chain 2. The closest branch 3. If equi-distant, lower count in alphabet 4. Alphabetically earlier at front
What is the general formula for Alkanes?
Cn H2N +2
What is an isomer?
Same molecular formula, different structural formula Same # of atoms bonded differently
What are the reactions that take place in Alkanes
- Complete Combustion 2. Substitution (Halogenation) 3. Dehyrogenation
what is complete and incomplete combustion
Reaction with oxygen (O2) to produce carbon dioxide and water incomplete: the reaction does not have sufficient oxygen, thus creating carbon monoxide
What is substitution (halogenation)
One or more hydrogen atoms of the alkane are replaced by different atoms
What is dehyrogenation
-hydrogen atoms (H2) are removed making an unsaturated hydrocarbon -needs Cr203 and 500.C -changes ALKANES to ALKENES
