Organic Chemistry Flashcards
How are organic compounds held together?
By covalent bonds.
What is the definition of a hydrocarbon?
A compound which consists only of carbon and hydrogen only.
What is a saturated compound?
A compound that only contains single bonds.
What is an unsaturated compound?
A compound that contains at least one Carbon Carbon multiple bond.
What is an aliphatic compound?
A compound where the carbon atoms joined together form a straight chain.
What is an alicyclic compound?
A compound where the carbon atoms joined together form a ring.
What is a homologous series?
A series of organic compounds with the same functional group but each successive member differing by -CH₂
What is a functional group?
A part of the organic molecule responsible for it’s chemical reactions.
What makes a molecule a haloalkane?
Any halogen which bonds to a carbon.
What makes a molecule an alcohol?
An OH group bonded to a carbon.
What makes a molecule an aldehyde.
A CHO group. The oxygen is double bonded to the carbon and the hydrogen is bonded to carbon.
What makes a molecule a ketone?
A double bonded oxygen bonded to a carbon.
What makes a molecule a carboxylic acid?
A COOH group where the oxygen is double bonded to the carbon and the O-H is bonded to the carbon.
What makes a molecule a diol?
Two OH groups bonded to carbons.
What is displayed formula?
A formula showing the positioning and bonds in a molecule.
