Organic Chemistry Flashcards
Hydrocarbons
Compounds that contain only H and C atoms
Saturated
Compound in which there are no multiple bonds between Carbon Atoms in the hydrocarbon chain
Unsaturated
Compounds with one or more multiple bonds between C atoms in the hydrocarbon chain
Structural Formula
Formula used to show how the atoms in a molecule bond with each other.
Condensed Structural formula
A notatation that shows the way in which atoms are bonded together but does not show all the bond lines
Homologous series
A series of organic compounds that can be described by the same general formula or in which one member different from the next with a CH2 group
Functional group
A bond or an atom or a group of atoms that determines the physicla and chemical properties of a group of organic compounds
Structural Isomers
Organic molecules with the same molecular formula but different structural formulae
Organic Molecule
Molecules containing C atoms
Molecular Formula
Chemical formula that indicates the type of atoms and the correct number of each in molecule
Chain Isomers
Organic Molecules withthe same molecular formula but different chains
Positional Isomers
Organic Molecules withthe same molecular formula, but different positions of the side chain, substituents or functional groups on the parent chain
Functional Isomers
Organic Molecules with the same molecular formula but different functional groups
The Addition Rule
When an unsymmetrical molecule containing hydrogen is added to an unsymmetrical, unsaturated compound the H atom attaches to the C of the double bond that has the greatest amount of H atoms attached. To it the remaining part of the added molecule is added to the C of the double bond having the most carbons attached to it
The Eliminations Rule
When a molecule containing hydrogen is removed from a saturated compound the hydrogen is removed from the carbon with the least amount of hydrogen atoms attached to it. The double bond forms between the carbon atom and the carbon atom to which the other part of the remove molecule was attached
