Define the term isomer.
Molecules with the same molecular formula but different structural formula.
Define the term organic molecule.
Molecules that contain carbon atoms
Define the term catenation
The ability of carbon to make bonds with itself
Define the term Hydrocarbon
An organic compound that consists of hydrogen and carbon atoms only.
Define the term molecular formula.
A chemical formula that indicates the type of atoms and the correct number of each in a molecule.
Define the term Structural formula
Shows which atoms are attached to which atoms within a molecule. Atoms are represented by the chemical symbols and lines are used represent all the bonds that hold the atoms together.
Define the term Condensed structural formula
A notation that shows the way in which atoms are bonded together in a molecule but does not show all the bond lines
Define the term Homologous series
Organic compounds that can be described using the same general formula
Define the term Functional Group
A bond or an atom or a group of atoms that determine the physical and chemical properties of a group of organic compounds.
Define the term Chain isomers
Molecules that have the same molecular for formula but different types of chains
Define the term Positional isomers
Molecules that have the same molecular formula but different positions of the substituents or functional groups on the parent chain
Define the term functional isomers
Molecules that have the same molecular formula but different functional groups
