Organic Chemistry Flashcards
What is a functional group
This is a group of bonded atoms that gives an organic compound is characteristic chemical properties.
Why are organic compounds classified on the basis of functional group
for easy identification, for the study of the characteristic properties of the members of a particular group
Define homologous series
There are a series of organic compounds with similar structural features but differ from adjacent members by a methelene unit
State two characteristics of a homologous series
They can be represented by a general molecular formula, all members have similar chemical properties, the differ from each neighboring member by 14 a.m.u, all members show a gradual change in physical properties, best of the group have same functional group
What is a hydrocarbon
This is a compound containing hydrogen and carbon only
Define isomerism
This is the occurrence of two or more compounds with the same molecular formula my different molecular structures or structural formula
Define isomers
This is compound to the same molecular formula but different structural formula
What is an aliphatic compound
Organic compounds with carbon atoms arranged in open chains or straight chain cyclic.
Define aromatic compounds
they are organic compounds containing benzene rings
State two properties of Carbon that is responsible for its ability to form mini compounds
It’s ability to catenate, to form isomers, it has four electrons in its valence shell and are available to form bonds, it can combine with so many other elements, it can form single double and triple carbon carbon bonds
What hybridization do carbon atoms in alkanes undergo
SP3 hybridization
