Organic Chemistry Flashcards
Define ‘hydrocarbon’
A compound that contains only Hydrogen and Carbon
What is Empirical formulae
Shows the simplest possible ratio of atoms in a molecule
What is Molecular formula
Shows the actual number of atoms in a molecule
What is a homologous series
A series of organic compounds that have similar features and properties due to them having the same functional group
What do all members of a homologous series have
The same functional group, The same general formula, similar chemical properties, The difference between one member and the next is CH2
What is a functional group
A group of atoms bonded in a specific way which influences the properties of the homologous series
what is an isomer
Compounds that have the same molecular formula but different displayed formulae
what is an alkane
compounds of Hydrogen and Carbon with only single bonds between them
what are the properties of the main fractions of crude oil
Viscosity, colour, melting/ boiling point, volatility
where are fossil fuels mainly found
Coal, natural gas, oil, oil shales
what does natural gas consist of mainly
Methane CH4
when does complete combustion occur
when there is excess oxygen
what are the products of complete combustion
carbon dioxide and water
what are the products of incomplete combustion
carbon monoxide and water
what are the dangers of carbon monoxide
Binds well to haemoglobin and therefore stops oxygen binding which stops the transfer of oxygen to organs
