Acids, salts, bases. Flashcards
what are the 2 indicators used in titrations
Methyl orange and phenolphthalein
How can you make a soluble salt
option A: insoluble base + acid
option B: acid + alkali
How can you make a soluble salt with heating
Heat acid until warm. Add the insoluble base solid. Stir until excess. Filter the content. Heat until crystals just begin to appear. Leave somewhere to evaporate and crystallise.
how can you make a soluble salt with titration
Titration then evaporate salt solution until crystals start to appear. allow crystals to form.
What is titration
Method of analysing the concentration of solutions. They can measure how much alkali is needed to neutralise a quantity of acids.
Explain titration
Measure 25cm^3 of hydrochloric acid using a pipette. Add to conical flask. Fill burette with sodium hydroxide solution. Take reading. Add a few drops of phenolphthalein indicator. Add sodium hydroxide until end point. swirl the flask vigorously. take final readings.
what metals will react with dilute acids
any above hydrogen in reactivity series
which bases are insoluble
All carbonates apart from sodium, potassium and ammonium. All hydroxides apart from sodium, potassium and calcium
which nitrates are insoluble
none
which chlorides are insoluble
silver and lead
What does an Acid + base make
salt and water
what does metal + acid make
If its a metal on its own then salt and hydrogen. If its a metal oxide then salt and water
How to make an insoluble salt
Mix two soluble salts, filtering, washing, drying.
which sulfates are insoluble
Barium sulfate, Lead sulfate and calcium sulfate
