Organic Chemistry Flashcards
What is a Alkane?
A alkane is a saturated hydrocarbon consisting entirely of single bonded carbon and hydrogen atoms.
What is a Alkene?
An alkene is an unsaturated hydrocarbon containing at least 1 carbon carbon double bond.
What is a aromatic?
An aromatic is a type of hydrocarbon characterized by a ring structure with alternating single and double bonds.
Activation Energy:
The minimum amount of energy required to break the bonds in the reactants for a chemical change to occur.
Energy
Energy is described as the capacity to do work or cause change.
Chemical Potential Energy:
Energy stored in chemical bonds of a substance.
Enthalpy
The total energy present in a substance.
A endothermic Reaction:
Endo thermic - More energy is taken in to beak the bonds in the reactants than released by the bonds being formed in the products. Therefore energy is absorbed. Heat energy is taken from the surroundings.
Temperature of the substance drops. Enthalpy is +delta H. reactants < products.
An Exothermic Reaction:
Exxo-Heat (Energy) given off from system to the surroundings.
Temperature of the substance rises. Enthalpy is negative. - Delta H. Reactants> products.
What is a fuel?
A fuel is a substance that has large amount of chemical energy stored in it.
What are fossil Fuels:
Fossil fuels are non-renewable fuels.
Biofuels:
Biofuels are fuels that are derived from plants.
Three common fuels, biogas, bioethanol, and biodiesel.
Biogas
biogas - Released during the breakdown of organic matter/waste by anerobic bacteria(don’t require oxygen). These bacteria take complex carbohydrates and proteins and break them down into Co2 and Methane.
Biodiesel:
Biodiesel is a mixture of organic compounds called easters, these are produced when things like vegetable oils/animals fats react with an alcohol.
