Q

Explain fractional distillation

A

Heated crude oil enters a tall fractionating column, which is hot at the bottom and gets cooler towards the top
Vapours from the oil rise through the column
Vapours condense when they become cool enough
Liquids are led out of the column

Q

What is the structure and bonding of carbon dioxide, magnesium oxide and silicon dioxide?

A

Carbon dioxide and silicon dioxide are made up of normal atoms while magnesium oxide is formed from ions
Silicon dioxide and magnesium oxide form giant structures while carbon dioxide forms small structures
They all have weak IMF
Carbon dioxide has double bonds, while silicon dioxide is made of single bonds
