organic chem 👩🔬 Flashcards
what is homolytic fission
breaking of a covalent bond such that one electron goes to each of the atoms, forming free radicals
what is heterolytic fission
breaking of a covalent bond such that both the electrons go to the same atom, forming positive and negative ions
definition of constitutional (structural) isomerism
same molecular formula but different structural formula
what is enantiomerism
same molecular formula and structural formula but with different arrangement of atoms
define what is a free radical
an atom or molecule having an unpaired electron ➡️ electron deficient and is unstable because it is very energetic and has high tendency to pair up with another radical to complete its octet of electrons
what are the problems with FRS
- multi substitution
- production of isomeric products
