organic Flashcards
inorganic
Inorganic chemistry deals with the study of inorganic compounds, which typically do not contain carbon-hydrogen
Key Areas of Study
Metals and Alloys:
Properties, reactions, and uses of metals and their alloys.
Example: Iron, copper, aluminum alloys.
Acids and Bases:
Properties and reactions of acids and bases.
Example: Hydrochloric acid (HCl), sodium hydroxide (NaOH).
Examples of Inorganic Compounds
Water (H₂O)
Ammonia (NH₃)
Sulfuric acid (H₂SO₄)
Sodium chloride (NaCl)
Organic
Organic chemistry is the study of carbon-containing compounds, primarily those with carbon-hydrogen (C-H) bonds.
Key Areas of Study
Hydrocarbons:
Compounds composed solely of carbon and hydrogen.
Example: Methane (CH₄), benzene (C₆H₆).
Functional Groups:
Groups of atoms that confer specific chemical properties to organic molecules.
Example: Alcohols (–OH), carboxylic acids (–COOH), amines (–NH₂).
Examples of Organic Compounds
Ethanol (C₂H₅OH)
Acetic acid (CH₃COOH)
Glucose (C₆H₁₂O₆)
Acetaminophen (C₈H₉NO₂)
