organic Flashcards
what are Aliphatic, Alicyclic and Arenes/Aromatic
Aliphatic - straight/ branched chain
Alicylcic - closed ring of carbon atoms
Arenes/Aromatic - derived from benzene ring (6 carbon atoms in a ring)
What is saturated and unstaturated
saturated is only C-C bonds
unsaturated is at least C-C double bond
What is viscosity and how does it affect it
How well it flows
Larger molecule, higher viscosity
Shorter molecule, lower viscosity
what is flammability and how does it affect it
How well it burns
Larger molecule, lower flammability
Shorter molecule, higher flammability
what is boiling point and how does it affect it
Larger molecule, higher BP
Shorter molecule, lower BP
more london forces
what is volatile and does it affect it
ease at which changes into a gas below BP
Larger molecule, lower volatility
Shorter molecule, higher volatility
what is E and Z isomers
E-isomer is where they are opposite level
Z-isomer is where they are on the same level
what happens when you burn cyclohexene
oxidation reaction
purple to colourless
what is an addition reaction
pi bond is weakest so is broken and replace with another molecule forming two sigma bonds meaning its an endothermic reaction
what is electrophile
any species which is attracted to electron-rich region in other molecules or ions. it must be something which caries either a positive charge or is a electron-poor region
what is bromine water
bromine water can react with .xOH- molecule and form bromine alcohol
what is the inductive effect
carbon atoms on the chain will go to where the most carbons atoms it can be surrounded by
