Organic 1 - Chapter 13: Halogenalkanes [WIP] Flashcards

Q

What is the solubility of halogenalkanes?

A

Cδ+ - Xδ- bond not polar enough to make them soluble in water

The main intermolecular forces of attraction are dipole-dipole and vdw

*They can mix with hydrocarbons** making them a great dry-cleaning fluid

Q

What is the trend in boiling point of halogenalkanes?

A

Larger chain -> Higher BP

Go down halogen group -> Higher BP

These are caused by increased vdw forces as the molecules are bigger and thus have more electrons

Branching -> generally lowers BP

Q

How do halogenalkanes react and what factors affect it?

A

Almost always reacts by breaking C-X bond

Reactivity depends on Cδ+ - Xδ- bond polarity and C-X bond enthalpy
