Organells Flashcards
Microtubule
Track for stuff to move on (thick hollow tubes)
Cytoplasm
Holds everything in place. The fluid
Microfilament
Pulls membrane to move cell (thin rods)
Intermediate fibers
Anchors organelles to a certain spot
3 fibers of cytoskeleton
Microtubule-> tracks for stuff to move on
Microfilaments-> whole cell movement
Intermediate fibers-> anchors organelles
Nucleus
Directs cell activity
Nuclear envelope
The membrane that surrounds the nucleus. Let’s stuff in and out of nucleus
Nucleolus
In the nucleus, holds ribosomes stores RNA
2 kinds of ribosomes
Free– suspended in cytoplasm (stays in cell)
Bound– leaves cell, can switch between the two, makes proteins stuck to other organelles
Vesicle
Membrane bound packages
Endoplasmic reticulum
Moves substances around in the cell. A railroad
Smooth ER
No ribosomes. Makes lipids, breaks down toxins
Rough ER
Transports proteins, bumpy because of proteins.
Golgi apparatus
Stores and packages proteins. The UPS
Lysosome
Recycles old/broken organelles. Digests to provide nutrients
