Organelles Flashcards
What is a nuclear envelope?
Double membrane surrounding the nucleus of a cell
What is a cell wall?
Tough outer layer of plant cells that helps support and protect the cell; also found around bacterial cells
What is a nucleus?
Eukaryotic cell structure that contains the genetic material, DNA
What is a cell membrane?
Lipid barrier that surrounds the cell; also known as the plasma membrane
What is a nucleolus?
Area within the nucleus where ribosomes are made
What are ribosomes?
Organelles that make proteins
What is a Golgi body?
Organelle that processes and packages proteins
What is are lysosomes?
Organelle of the cell that breaks down and recycles old molecules
What are mitochondria?
Organelle of the cell in which energy is generated
What are vacuoles?
A membrane-bound space within the cell used for storage
What are organelles?
Structures within the cell that have a specific role
What is an endoplasmic reticulum?
Organelle that is the site of lipid synthesis and protein modification
What is cytoplasm?
Entire contents of the cell inside the plasma membrane, excluding the nucleus
What is a chloroplast?
Organelle that carries out photosynthesis in plants
What is chromatin?
Thin strands the genetic material
