Q

What is the purpose of the cell wall?

A

Provide rigidity and structure to the cell (eg. prevents plant cells from exploding if filled with too much water)

13
Q

Why are ribosomes attached to the rough endoplasmic reticulum?

A

The ribosomes produce proteins directly into the ER, which then distribute the proteins to their destinations via vesicles.

14
Q

What is the difference between plant vacuoles and animal vacuoles?

A

Plant vacuoles are larger, and are called the central vacuole, taking up almost 90% of the cell. Animal cells have smaller, and often multiple vacuoles.

16
Q

Where is a nucleolus located, and what does it make?

A

In the nucleus, and it makes ribosomes.

17
Q

What do ribosomes do?

A

Synthesise proteins

18
Q

What does the mitochondria produce during cellular respiration?

A

ATP molecules

19
Q

What does the cytoskeleton do?

A

Maintains the shape of cell

20
Q

Which organelle produces most of the cell’s energy?

A

Mitochondria

21
Q

What does the smooth endoplasmic reticulum do?

A

Transport proteins and synthesises lipids (fats & oils)

22
Q

Purpose of lysosomes.

A

Breakdown of waste material

23
Q

What are vesicles made of, and what do they do?

A

Made of phospholipids (like the cell membrane), transport materials through the cell membrane.

24
Q

What types of organelles have a double membrane?

A

Nuclei, mitochondria, plastids

25
What do plastids do?
Manufacturing and storage of food
26
What does the mitochondria need to function?
Glucose and oxygen
27
What do flagella do?
Assist in cell movement
28
What are cilia, and what do they do?
Tiny hair-like structures, move in waves to clear microbes and keep airways free from mucus
29
What are centrioles, and what do they do?
Paired, barrel-shaped organelles, create spindle fibers for cell division
