Organelles Flashcards
Nucleus
Considered brain of the cell as it directs the function of the cell, contains the DNA material
Cell Membrane
Surrounds and protects contents of cell
Gatekeeper of the cell as it controls what moves in and out of a cell. It is considered to be semi-permeable
Cell Wall
Provide structure and strength for plant cell
Made of cellulose
Cytoskeleton
Helps maintain shape and provide strength while helping distribute particles around cell
Rough endoplasmic reticulum (RER)
Has ribosomes attached to outside
Makes proteins
Smooth endoplasmic reticulum (SER)
Makes Fat (lipids)
Golgi apparatus (Golgi Body)
Packaging place to help process and package lipids but especially protein
Mitochondria
Considered the powerhouse of the cell as it produces energy for the cell
Ribosomes
Free ribosomes float in cytoplasm while other ribosomes are found on RER
Ribosomes make proteins
Lysosomes
Break down waste materials in cells
Vacuoles
Storage containers for food & wastes,, Larger in plants (largest organelle) than animals
Prokaryotes vs eukaryotes
Prokaryotes - do not have a true nucleus, have dna material but not bound in nucleus (Monerans)
-
Eukaryotes - have a true nucleus that has dna (Protists, as well as Fungi, Plants, and Animals)
