Organelles Flashcards
What are the four non membrane bound organelles
- Ribosomes
- Centrioles
- Cilia and flagella
- Cytoskeleton
What is an organelle
An organelle is a sub cellular structure that has one or more specific jobs to perform in the cell
1.What’s a membrane bound organelle 2.what does the membrane do
- A membrane bound organelle is a cellular structure that’s surrounded by a phospholipid bilayer
- This membrane separates the organelle from the cytoplasm and allows the organelle to control what enters and leaves the cell
What is the nuclear envelope and what is its function
The nuclear envelope is the double membrane that surrounds the nucleus and separates the content of the nucleus from the cytoplasm
1.Why is there tiny pores on the nuclear envelope
2. What is the pore complex structure and function
1.The nuclear envelope is covered in tiny pores where certain substance can enter and exit
2.The pore complex is a protein structure that regulates what flows in and out
Where is chromatin most densely packed in the nucleus
Nucleolus
What is chromatin
chromatin is the mixture of DNA and proteins that form the chromosomes found in the cells
What are ribosomes made up of
Proteins and rRNA (ribosomal RNA)
Where are ribosomes present in the cell and what do they do
free ribosomes are free in the cytoplasm and generally make proteins used within the cytoplasm
bound ribosomes are bound on the rough ER(endoplasmic reticulum) and make proteins for the cell membranes or to be exported elsewhere
Where are ribosomes present in the cell

What are the folds in the Golgi body called and what does each end do
Golgi body Consists of folds called cisternae as
The cis end receives molecules
the trans end ships molecules out
What is the space between chloroplasts and mitochondria’s double membrane
Intermembranous space
What are the folds in mitochondria’s second membrane called
Cristae
What is the function of lysome
Contain digestive enzymes which break down molecules e.g non functional organelles
What is the function of the nucleus
- DNA replication and transcription
- Contains genetic code
- Site of ribosomes synthesis
