Organelles Flashcards
Nucleus
Contains DNA, directs cellular activity, surrounded by nuclear envelop with pores that allow transports of materials
Cytoplasm
Gel like substance inside cell membrane, organelles suspended in it, allows for cytoplasmic streaming(speed in transport of molecules)
Cell wall
Found in plants, not in animal cells, rigid frame around cell, strength and support
Chloroplasts
Found only in plants and some protists, contains chlorophyll; site of photosynthesis, energy from the sun converts to convert c02 and water jnto sugars
Vacuoles/vesicles
Membrane bound structures, store nutrients, productions of secretion and fats, plant cells have one central vacuole. Vesicles transport material through the cell
ER
Series of interconnected small tubes(tubules), materials transported via tubes, used for protein synthesis. The smooth ER is responsible for synthesis of lipids=fat/oil production. Rough ER has ribsomes on it and is responsible for protein synthesis
Ribosomes
Can be on cytoplasm or protein synthesis, protein synthesis
Lysosome
Membrane bound sacs, digestion, defence against bacteria, destruction of damaged organelles DIGESTIVE SYSTEM OF THE CELL, located in cytoplasm
Golgi apparatus
Flat, disc shaped sacs, secretion, transports proteins and nutrients, receives from ER, transports out of cell
Mitochondria
Reactions occur to convert chemical energy into energy the cell can use through cellular respiration
