Complete Brief Review Flashcards
What restricts the size of a unicellular organism?
The SA to Volume ratio and the related rate of diffusion
What permits a multicellular organisms growth?
The transport system allowing an efficient exchange of materials
What happens to cells as a plant grows?
They begin to have specialized functions
Tissues
Groups of cells that perform the same function; individual specialized cells together
System
Tissues contributing to the same general function form organs which are part of a system
What are the two systems in the plant
Shoot system and root system
What is the shoot system
Everything above ground, also include tubers(swollen stems that store food; potatoes)
What is the root system
Everything underground; the groundwork
Meristems
The growth Center of the plant, special tissue found in plants that divide and produce new cells, different meristems produce root tissue and shoot tissue
Does cell division/mitosis occur at the same rate throughout the organsim?
No, occurs at different rates
Dermal tissue
Outer layer, covers herbaceous/non-woody plants
Ground tissue
Makes up majority of the plant, dermal tissue underneath
Vascular tissue
Responsible for transport of material throuhghout plant, made up of xylem and phloem
Xylem
‘Water delivery System’ of the plant; network of long tube like cells forming a pathway to move through. Carries water and nutrients upwards in a plant
Phloem
‘Food delivery System’ of the plant, network of tiny pipes transports sugars and other organic compounds produced in the leaves through the rest of the plant
