Organelle Function Flashcards
Centrioles Function
Forms a spindle of protein fibres that move the chromosones during celldivision
Plama Membrane Function
A selective permiable barrier that controls the passage pf subtances in and out the cell
Nucleus
Chromosones containing DNA that controls the synthesis of protein. Risosomes are fomred in the nucleus
Mitocondria
The site of aerobic resbiration and responsible for producing most of the ATP in the cell
ER
Forms a system of channels for transporting materials through the cytoplasm. One type has ribosomes ond its surface and is the site of protein synthesis. The other type has no ribosomes and is where steriodies and lipids are synthesised
Golgi Body
Recieves protein synthesised on the ER and prepares them for secretion from the cell. This often involes adding carbohydres to the proteins to make them into glycopproteins
Lysosomes
Responsible for destroying old organelles that are broken. Phagocytes use lysosomes to disgest engulfed bacteria
Chloroplast
Contain photosynthetic pigments which trap light energy for photosynthesis
Ribosomes
Protein synthesis. Primary protein sturcute is formed at the ribosomes
Vacuole
Contains cellsap and stores solutes such as glucose. Swells due to osmosis.
Nuclear Pores
Allows the transport of mRNA and ribosomes in and out of the nucleus
Nuclear envelope
Separates the contents of the nucleus from the cytoplasm
Nucleolus
Produces rRNA, tRNA and ribosomes
