Organelle Flashcards
Non membrane bound organelles
Ribosomes
The cell wall
The cytoskeleton
What organelles are only present in plant cells?
Chloroplasts
Large vacuole
Tonoplast(vacuole membrane)
Cellulose cell wall
What organelles are only present in animal cells?
Centriole (microtubules in mitosis)
Lysosomes
Cilia/ undulipodia
What do lysosomes do?
Break down macromolecules, old cell parts and microorganisms
Role of cytoskeleton
Whole cell support
Allow movement via cilia
Move vesicles
Form centrioles
What does iodine stain?
Cell walls and starch grains
What are differential stains?
Only stains a few structures in a cell
What are all purpose stains?
Stains every structure in the cell
What does acetic orcin stain?
DNA dark red
What does gentian violet stain?
Bacterial cell walls violet
What does sudan red stain
Lipids red
What does methyl blue stain?
It is an all purpose stain
How does the Golgi modify proteins?
Adding carbohydrates
Cutting them and arranging them in a different structure
Adding lipids
What is exocytosis?
The bulk transport of molecules out of a cell(active process)
