organ transplantation (general) Flashcards

Q
what do immunosuppressant drugs do to prevent rejection?
A
block lymphocyte subsets responsible for immune response against new organ’s surface antigens
1
Q
what must match in order for a transplantation to take place?
A
- HLA (human lymphocytic antigen) aka MHC (major histocompatibility complex–types A,B &O)
2
Q
how is immune response modulated?
A
- macrophages present antigens to T-cells
- B-cells use IL-1

Q
what are the side effects of these drugs:
- cyclosporine
- azathioprine
- prednisone
- antilymphocyte globin
- OKT3
A
what are the side effects of these drugs:
- cyclosporine-hypertension, elevated bun, enhanced renal sensitivity to insults
- azathioprine*- severe leukopenia, anemia, thrombocytopenia
- prednisone- adrenal suppression
- antilymphocyte globin*-leukopenia, thrombocytopenia
- OKT3-serum sickness
*(the “a”’s cause blood issues (leukopenia and thrombocytopenia) but “an” causes anemia)
