Organ Systems of the Body Flashcards
Integumentary Location
Skin, nails, and hair; cutaneous sense organs and glands
Integumentary Function
- Protects deeper organs from injury due to bumps, chemicals and dehydration
- Excretes salts and urea
- Helps regulate body temperature
Skeletal Location
Bones, cartilage, tendons, ligaments, and joints
Skeletal Function
- Supports and protects internal organs
- Provides levers for muscular action
- Stores minerals (calcium)
- Cavities provide a site for blood cell formation
Muscular Location
Muscles attached to the bone
Muscle Function
- Skeletal muscles contract or shorten to allow for movement
- Generates heat
Nervous Location
Brain, spinal chord, nerves, special sense organs
Nervous Function
- Allows body to detect changes in internal and external environments and respond by activating appropriate muscles and glands
- Help maintain short term homeostasis by rapidly transmitting electrical signals
Endocrine Location
Pituitary, thyroid, parathyroid, adrenal, pineal glands, ovaries, testes, and pancreas
Endocrine Function
- Promotes growth and development
- produces chemical messengers that travel in the blood to exert their effects on target organs
- Plays role in long term homeostasis
Cardiovascular Location
Heart, blood vessels and blood
Cardiovascular Function
- Carries blood containing oxygen and CO2, nutrients and waste .. to and from cells
- Protects body with blood clots, antibodies and other protein molecules in the blood
Lymphatic/immune Location
Lymphatic vessels, lymph nodes, spleen, thymus, and tonsils
Lymphatic/immune Function
- Picks up fluid leaked from blood vessels and returns it
- Cleanses blood of pathogens and debris
- Houses cells (lymphocytes and others ) that act in the immune response
Respiratory Location
Nose, pharynx, larynx, trachea, bronchi, and lungs
Respiratory Function
- Keeps the blood continuously supplied with oxygen while removing CO2
- Contributes to the acid/bace balance of the blood via the carbonic acid/bicarbonate buffer system
Urinary Location
Kidneys, ureters, urinary bladder, urethra
Urinary Function
- Filters the blood and rids body of nitrogen containing waste that result from the breakdown of proteins, and nucleic acid by the body’s cells
- Maintains water electrolyte and acid-base balance of the blood
Reproductive Location
Male testes, scrotum, penis, duct systems that carry sperm
Female ovaries, uterine tubes, uterus and vagina
Reproductive Function
Produce germ cells for producing offspring
Female uterus houses baby until birth
