Organ Systems Flashcards
What are 11 organ systems?
Muscular System
Cardiovascular System
Urinary System
Integumentary System
Skeletal System
Digestive System
Nervous System
Lymphatic System
Reproductive System
Endocrine System
Respiratory System
What is the function of the muscular system?
Allows manipulation of the environment, locomotion, and facial expression; maintains posture; produces heat.
What is the function of the integumentary system?
Forms the external body covering; protects deeper tissue from injury; synthesizes vitamin D; location of sensory receptors and sweat and oil glands
What is the function of the skeletal system?
Protects and supports body organs; provides a framework the muscles use to cause movement
What is the function of the nervous system?
Fast acting control system of the body; activates appropriate muscles and glands
The function of the endocrine system
Glands secrete hormones, that regulates processess such as growth reproduction and nutrient use by body cells
What is the function of the cardiovascular system?
Blood vessels transport blood, which carries oxygen, nutrients, carbon dixoide, wastes; the heart pumps blood
The function of the endocrine system
Glands secrete hormones, that regulate processes such as growth reproduction and nutrient use by body cells
What is the function of the lymphatic system?
Picks up fluid leaked from blood vessels and returns it to the blood. Houses white blood cells involved in immunity
What is the function of the respiratory system?
Keeps blood constantly supplied with oxygen and removes carbon dioxide through gas exchange through the walls of the air sacs of the lungs
What is the function of the digestive system?
Breaks food down into absorbable nutrients
What is the function of the urinary system?
Elimates waste from the body
regulates water, electroles and acid
What is the function of the reproductive system?
Production of offspring
