ORG-2 Stereochemistry Flashcards
What is Stereochemistry?
Study of the arrangements of atoms in a molecule in three dimensions.
What is an isomer?
Two different molecules with the same molecular formula.
What is a functional isomer?
Structural isomers that have differin functional groups
What is a positional isomer/ regioisomer?
An isomer where the functional group is in a different position.
What are geometric isomers?
Where an isomer has Cis and trans names, where cis means that substituents are on the same side of a ring or double bond.
What can be used instead of Cis/trans?
E, Z notation - Zame Zides, Epposites (Of substituents of highest priority)
What is a stereoisomer?
Different compound with the same structure, differing only in spatial orientation of atoms.
A molecule can’t be chiral if…
it contains a line of symetry
What is an enantiomer?
Molecules with opposite absolute configuration at each and every chiral carbon.
What are diastereomers?
Any pair of stereoisomers that are not enantiomers.
How are priorities assigned to groups?
CIP system -
Higher atomic number = higher priority
